Oregon Coast - Day Two, Tillamook and Cape Meares

Day two we headed over to Tillamook for cheese and ice cream.
While we were driving over to Tillamook, we got stuck in a small bit of construction. Stacy was entertaining herself with her music, and I decided to be sneaky and catch it on video. Lots of laughing ensued afterward.

After we got done at Tillamook, we saw signs on the drive back to the Cape Meares lighthouse, so we decided to check it out.

This is the Octopus Tree, it's a sitka spruce and I guess there is a lot of debate over how the branches got this way. Some people think it's because of the wind, others think it's because the Native Americans bent the branches while they were still flexible and then used the branches to hold canoes and other ritual objects. Either way, it's a really cool tree. The branches spread out 16 feet from the base and the branches are over 100 feet tall.

These next photos are of the Cape Meares Lighthouse. Unfortunately in January, two idiots decided to shoot at the lighthouse for apparently no reason and have racked up $500,000 in damages. It's so frustrating when people do things to damage such beautiful works of art for no reason other than destruction. Fortunately, they were caught and will be spending a nice amount of time in jail, which doesn't do anything to fix the damages, but does give me a little satisfaction that some justice was served.

You can see the holes in the glass where they shot at the lighthouse. Inside is the Fresnal lens, which allows the light from the lighthouse to be seen from a greater distance. This lens was brought over from France and I guess is pretty expensive and rare, which is why the damages to the light house are so high.
